CDV of a Japanese Sailor, c1902

CDV of an unidentified Japanese sailor, who was with the Japanese delegation to the Anglo-Japanese Alliance talks in England in 1902. The talks were meant to prevent Russia expanding into Manchuria.  The photo credit is to The Baden-Powell Photographic Company, East Street, Southampton.

At the time Baden-Powell was a national hero who promoted the Scouting movement, and many of the surviving CDVs of the company are of children.  The business was owned by two sisters, Priscilla and Clementine Douglas, who moved to the East Street location in 1900.  Priscilla was the photographer and Clementine the photo painter, and they had two photographic assistant, William Smith and Norris Ball.  Clementine died in 1916 and Priscilla continued to run the business until retired in 1923.
