DESCRIPTION: The unique plate set was produced with the bold gold band on the scalloped rim. The hand painted designs are all similar, but slightly different from plate to plate. The design looks so classical. This is truly an eye-catching set of 11 decorative salad plates. The detail on this, especially the birds, is fascinating. These make a beautiful set of display plates or they could be used daily.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. The only issue is a tiny rim nick on the back of one plate that does not affect the gold or show on the front. See photo #23. There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold or paint.
DIMENSIONS: The plates have a diameter of 7 1/4" with a height of 3/4".
HISTORY/MARKS: This business was founded as Sumners & Co. in 1798 at the Corner of School & Washington Streets in Boston Massachusetts. It was an importer and vendor of glass, china, and crockery-ware. In 1861 the business was inherited by Richard Briggs. An advertisement dated 1872, listed this as an importer and dealer of French, English and India china. We found another brochure dated April 12, 1926. From an obituary, the son of Richard Briggs, also named Richard Briggs, died on December 14, 1934 at the age of 71. By 1926, the company had moved to Newbury Street and was reported to have closed by 1946. We date the circa on this set to be in the early 1900's.
