Born in St. Petersburg (Russian Empire) in 1834.Vladimir Ferrein received his primary education at home, working at his father's pharmacy. Having successfully passed the exams for the title of assistant pharmacist, and then for the title of pharmacist at Moscow University, he completed an internship in the laboratory of the professor of chemistry Wilhelm Büchner in Munich. Upon returning to Russia, Vladimir Karlovich defended his dissertation for a master's degree in pharmacy. He headed the Moscow Pharmaceutical Society and the pension and auxiliary fund of pharmacists.

In the 1880s, he took over his father's pharmacy and began to rebuild its building. In 1881, Ferrein introduced an innovation to reward the work of the company's employees: he gave his employees the opportunity to participate in a share of the company's income.

Vladimir Karlovich invented original ways to attract customers to a pharmacy. It was believed that bear fat was the best pharmaceutical ingredient for preparing good medicines, so Vladimir Karlovich bought a bear. Every day he was taken to a watering hole at the city fountain. After the death of the bear, his stuffed animal was installed on the second floor of the pharmacy.

Vladimir Karlovich Ferrein was also famous as one of the leading manufacturers of perfumery. In the largest European pharmacy of that time, which was a pharmacy at 23 Nikolskaya Street, one could buy about seventy types of perfumes and colognes, as well as many other perfumery products.

After the 1917 revolution and the nationalization of the VK Ferrein Association, Vladimir Karlovich got a job as a storekeeper in his own pharmacy.
