Up for auction is this Albany, New York Obsolete Banknote, $5.00 1863 issued by “The Albany City Bank”.  This note is UNLISTED in Haxby!!!  The closest Haxby Obsolete Banknote Catalog number for this note is:  NY35-C40b. But look closely, this note also has the “FIVE” black micro printed strip at the top and bottom of the note as well as a different font on the “FIVE” over print in orange.  This note appears to have a penned black signature of the Cashier:  H.H. Martin and the printed signature of the President: Erastus Corning.  The note is made payable to George C. Gray but printed in black, not hand written!  The note was monetized on October 1, 1863.  According to Haxby, this bank existed from 1834 – 1865 and then converted over to become Charter #1291, The Albany City National Bank, lasting until it liquidated on February 5, 1902.

This Banknote is printed in 2 Colors, Orange and Black and was printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edison, of New York and also has the (American Banknote) ABCo. Logo to the left of the upper right vignette.  The central vignette depicts a Maid with Mercury & Vulcan Seated at center.  There is the New York State Seal inside an oval at the left border.  The State Capitol Building at the upper right corner inside a circle.  At the center there is an Orange” FIVE” overprint in an attempt deter counterfeiting.  The reverse of this note is unprinted, but has contemporary pencil notations “J. DAVIS July 24, 1867.  This is a nicely executed contemporary counterfeit.  Don’t let this Collectable $5.00 Banknote get away!

This Obsolete Banknote has an overall tone or cast making it slightly darker.  There is a rust spot at the Cashiers signature.  There are two minor splits in the bottom margin, one is 3/16” the other 1/8”.  The lower right corner was split, but reinforced.  The upper right corner is slightly rounded.  There are some very minor margin nicks or divots all around and a few pinholes.  These minor defects are all very common on a circulated Obsolete Banknotes that are 155+ years old.  I grade this note as a Fine.  Please look the scans over carefully, and judge the quality of the note for yourself before bidding!
