Mendel Brothers was established in 1855.  They became a very prominent department store in Chicago.  They suffered severe losses in the late 1940's and into the 1950's.  The decline was attributed to more people moving to the suburbs and shopping less in the city.  They were eventually purchased by Wiebolt's Department store in 1960.
