19C Life-Size  Italian Marble Statue Cleopatra  w/Matching Pedestal  by Romanelli... Ladies and Gentlemen, if I may have your undivided attention, please... This is an Authentic Original Antique Italian Hand-Sculpted Carved  Top Quality Carrara Marble  Life-Size Figure Statue  of History's Incomparable,  Immortal Cleopatra, queen of the Nile... It was carved by renowned  19th Century  Italian sculptor,  professor Pasquale Romanelli... (1812-1887) created in Florence, Italy circa 1880... The Queen, elaborately dressed, clasping the Asp to her breast, (which I can attest to its absolutely incredible life-like feel),  tears streaming down her cheeks, the naturalistic base carved  with a basket of fruit and inscribed to the side. P.R. Romanelli, Firenze... the matching pedestal  with a circular top  above a spreading fluted column centered by an oval disc  flanked by a bird head and wing  on tapering foot and circular base... Pasquale Romanelli studied at the Academy in Florence  under Luigi Pampaloni  and Lorenzo Bartolini,  swiftly becoming the favoured pupil  and protege of the latter,  taking over Bartolini's atelier  upon his death... In 1861, the art critic,  Theodosia Trollope, visited Romanelli's studio in Florence and her contemporary review provides a fascinating account  of his successful  and prolific workshop... (see The Art Journal, 1861, pp.4-263) Romanelli worked on several  public monuments, of which  the most celebrated  and most beautiful  is his Monument  to Vittorio Fossombroni... in the Piazza S. Francesco  in Arezzo, Italy... His notoriety extended  to decorative sculpture and he was particularly renowned  for his Sensuous  Mythological subjects... such as Andromeda,  (see Christie's, London,  31 October 1996, lot 432) and biblical heroines such as Ruth,  (see Christie's London, 30 May 1996, lot 272), and Allegorical themes, such as The Four Seasons, for Lord Portarlington... A popular subject  among his contemporaries... Although more frequently depicted reclining,  Romanelli's full-length standing portrait of the doomed Cleopatra exemplifies both his technical skills and sensitivity as a sculptor...   Sublime Ethereal Semi-Nude Beauty surmounted with neo-classical decorative elements... and graceful flowing traditional classic Grecian female fine-detailed features... in all aspects of her Queenly form  from the top of her tresses  to the tips of her toenails... exquisitely executed  by one of history's finest  Italian Sculptors...  From a Private Collection...
