Pocket Watch 1881 Vandome & Co Adelaide Sterling Silver English Fusee Lever Working

This is an old English sterling silver fusee lever pocket with ‘W. Vandome & Co, Adelaide’ printed on its dial. W. Vandome & Co were an Optician and Watchmaker in Adelaide in the late 1800s (around 1880s) located at 2 Rundle St on the corner with King William Road. It is in good working condition with a key wind and set movement and a machine turned sterling silver hunter case (see photos). It measures 48.3mm in diameter and 15.1mm thick. The hunter case is in good condition for a watch of this age with no significant dents or scratches however there is quite a bit of wear to the engine turned decoration on the outside of the case (see photos). The case has functioning front and rear catch springs, however the push spring that pushes the front cover open is quite weak. The covers all snap shut and close snugly with hinges all strong and tight. Both the inner and outer rear covers of the case have matching English Hallmarks for Stirling Silver, London, 1881, the serial number “477” and the case makers mark “JR”. The makers mark JR stands for John Rotherhams which matches the movement of the watch. There is a very faint name Charles Hill engraved into the inside of the rear cover that is barely visible (see photos). The dial is in excellent condition with no visible chips or hairline cracks (see photos). The watch has a glass crystal in excellent condition with no chips or scratches. The movement is an English fusee lever in excellent clean working condition still with its original dust cover (see photo). The movement has the following markings “Rotherhams, London” with the serial number “26570”, the Rotherham marking matches the makers mark on the case showing that the movement is original to the case. The watch is key wind, and includes a key which fits both the winder in the rear of the case and the square for setting the hands

The watch works, and I have wound and run it for 24 hours on my desk, and it appeared to keep time to within a couple of minutes. The watch has not been cleaned or serviced and so is sold as is.

This is a vintage item and therefore has wear. It is offered as is without guarantee other than an honest description. I do offer a refund policy, if you are not entirely satisfied and contact me within 7 days of receiving the watch I am happy to refund the purchase price of the watch (but not the postage costs) when it has been returned. I will only refund postage costs if I have made an error in my description of the watch.

Please ask any questions before bidding and I will do my best to answer queries promptly.
