A beautiful Vernon Kilns GINGHAM Vernonware SAUCE BOAT, 2 7/8" Tall from the Plaid Collection made in Vernon, California USA
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful sauce or gravy boat could be used for a variety of functions. The deep green colors are so crisp & clean and contrast with the yellows. Its hard to believe how well the patterns are painted when you consider that this is done by hand using a spinning potter's wheel.
CONDITION: While this sauce boat is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks and the paint appears as applied. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS: The sauce boat has a diameter of 4 1/2" with a height of 2 7/8". From handle to spout, the measurement is 6 5/8".
HISTORY/MARKS: The beautiful collectible California pottery Plaid Patterns were produced by Vernon Kilns after Faye Bennison acquired Poxon Pottery and China Company in 1931. The first Plaid Pattern, Organdie, was manufactured starting in 1937 and the other patterns such as Homespun, Gingham, and Tam O'Shanter were introduced in 1948. All of the Plaid Patterns continued until Vernon Kilns was acquired (including the molds & patterns) by Metlox Pottery in 1958. Metlox continued the Vernon factory for two years manufacturing under "Vernonware by Metlox". All of the Vernonware we have listed was before the acquisition by Metlox Pottery.
Artist Gale Turnbull designed the first plaids which were produced on the Montecito shapes and later the streamline shape was used for selected pieces. The plaid stripes were applied by hand. The hand painted finished product was accomplished by placing the pieces on a decorating wheel and using a wet paint brush held to the turning piece to blend the stripes. Lastly, the vivid rim color was applied to create their unique look matching the color of the middle stripe. Since these are hand painted, subtle differences are evident and add to their character and uniqueness. The sauce boat has mark #21 in Maxine Feek Nelson's Collectible Vernon Kilns 2nd edition which was used 1948-1958.
