Farquhar is a group of islands included in the Outer Seychelles Islands. The islands are located more than 700 kilometers southwest of the Seychelles capital Victoria on the island of Mahe. The atoll was named after Robert Townsend Farquhar in 1824. For many years, both Mauritius and Seychelles claimed the right to manage the atoll. In 1881, Seychelles authorities proposed that Farquhar, along with several other outer islands, be administered from Seychelles rather than Mauritius. After lengthy disputes, control of Farquhar passed to Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles. From 1965 until Seychelles gained independence in 1976, Farquhar was part of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The Farquhar Islands have been identified as a turtle nesting site and an important bird habitat.
