The jacquard loom was introduced to the US around 1824. When American coverlet weavers added the jacquard device to the top of their hand-powered looms, it allowed them to weave elaborate designs, printed letters, and numbers. Because there is a center seam in this piece, it means that it was woven on a hand powered loom.
