DESCRIPTION: The simple but elegant pattern uses the very dark blue, orange, green and white color palette on the leaves & flowers. This is all set on the high white of the fine bone china. The rims are trimmed in gold as well as the handle and foot of the cup. See the photos.
CONDITION: The condition of this decorative set is superb. We can find no defects no damage. There is no rubbing to the colors or gold. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is.
DIMENSIONS: The elegant cup has a diameter of 3 3/8" and a height of 2 7/8". The capacity of the cup is 6 ounces. The saucer has a diameter of 5 5/8" and a height of 13/16".
HISTORY/MARKS: The 37 year old Josiah Spode founded his Spode Pottery Company at Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 after having worked with many of the best potters in the Stoke-on-Trent area from the age of 16. He is credited with the development of a winning formula for making fine bone china and the perfection of blue under-glaze printing. Three of his original transferware patterns are still being produced today: Tower Blue, Willow, and Blue Italian. In 1833, Spode Pottery was sold to William Taylor Copeland and remained in the Copeland family until 1966. By 1976, the company had become part of the Royal Worcester Spode Group. Today, it is part of the Portmeirion Group and continues the production of high quality fine bone china at Stoke-on-Trent. The mark on this set is identified in Robert Copeland’s Spode & Copeland Marks as mark #507a used 1979 onward. The Orient pattern (Y8520) was produced 1986-1994. The date cipher K on the cup identifies production in 1986. The date cipher L on the saucer identifies production in 1987. This narrows the circa for the set to 1986-1987.
