Offered for your consideration is a vintage Dur-O-Lite No. 522 Ejector 0.9mm (.036”) lead pencil, USA-manufactured c.1960. Unlike the typical Dur-O-Lite, Autopoint, and many other mass-market models that used a simple propelling or spiraling design to advance the lead, this Dur-O-Lite employs a clutch repeater mechanism mostly found on costlier or drafting/technical pencils.

This pencil is made from burgundy (Dubonnet) plastic, with striated, chrome-plated steel writing cone, clip, and clicker/eraser cap. It bears a promotion for Wisconsin Gear & Engineering, but I’m fairly confident that it’s a salesman’s sample since the model name, number, and color is stamped on the barrel.

Please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this uncommon Dur-O-Lite Ejector pencil should join your collection.

This Dur-O-Lite pencil is in clean, excellent condition. It measures 5⅛” long by ⅜” wide. There are no chips, cracks, or scuffs, just some typical light marks from use and drawer storage over the years. Plus, the steel parts have no oxidation and the clip rests firmly against the barrel with no gap. Also, the barrel graphics are in great shape with no significant enamel wear. Overall, this pencil is quite nicely preserved.

Most importantly, this pencil works reliably, extending the lead with a push of the eraser cover. Retraction, when needed, involves an upward push of the lead with the clicker held down (so the clutch jaws are open). Plus, the eraser in its original cradle is present, but shows use and could stand to be replaced. Lastly, this vintage Dur-O-Lite is well-balanced with good mass and feels very nice on paper, especially with the larger, soft lead of yesteryear!

So, as pictured and described, this fairly scarce Dur-O-Lite Ejector clutch pencil is offered at a competitive price.
