Part of Marvel’s new line of reader-friendly, continuity free comics, The Ultimates is a revamped version of the classic Avengers comic. Focusing on a 21st Century update of Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, the Wasp and Giant-Man, the comic is fast, in-your-face and hardhitting. Re-created by writer Mark Millar and artist Bryan Hitch, the Ultimate team is well-funded, well-dressed and supplied with a glamorous headquarters, but they find themselves with little to do in the face of scared and absent super-villains. The Ultimates reads more like a soap opera filled with sexual tension and political intrigue than a mainstream super-hero team book. Great characterization and plots filled with twists and turns define this update. A worthy re-interpretation of the classic stories by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Ultimates advertises exactly what it delivers-the ultimate team of heroes!… even if they are somewhat tainted and flawed.
