The obverse side has an image of an eagle with a rattlesnake in its beak. This is a famous scene in Mexican history. The Aztecs saw this scene unfold and decided it was a sign that they should build their city there. This city is where the modern day Mexico City is today. Above this image is written ‘Estados Unidos Mexicanos’ which means ‘United Mexican States’. Around the central image are variations of the same scene as have been seen on previous years coins.
On the reverse side is a picture of Winged Victory, the statue that stands on a pedestal in Mexico City. This statue is a popular location for tourists and sports teams who want to celebrate a victory. Behind the statue are the Mexican Volcanos which are iconic to the Mexican people.
The proof elements really make this coin’s designs shine. Elements of the coin have a frosted appearance against a more mirror-like design. This makes a contrast that makes the design elements stand out more giving this coin a kind of 3-D look to it.
Collectors love these coins for their low mintages. After their release, they become scarce and hard to find when trying to purchase them later. These coins are minted at La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, North America’s oldest mint. The Libertad Coin was first introduced in 1981 and quickly became very popular.
