This
is an uncommon, very unusual, extremely interesting, and really collectable
edition of a zoo guide book from what is one of the U.K’s leading zoological
collections. Colchester Zoo was opened in June 1963 by two zoologists and was
taken over by the Tropeano family in 1983 and it is they who have transformed
it into what it is today. Beautifully illustrated and from the year 2019, the
guides 91 pages are packed with fantastic colour photos (several full page) of
some of the superb collection of species on show at the time and includes Bornean
orang-utan, chimpanzee, pileated gibbon, L’Hoests monkey, cherry-crowned
mangabey, mandrill, gelada baboon, Barbary macaque, Colombian black spider
monkey, yellow-breasted capuchin, common squirrel monkey, coppery titi monkey,
ring-tail lemur, black & white ruffed lemur, crowned lemur, red-bellied
lemur, golden lion tamarin, golden-headed lion tamarin, pied tamarin, African
lion, Amur tiger, Amur leopard, cheetah, Malayan sun bear, spotted hyaena,
African hunting dog, bush dog, Eurasian grey wolf, fennec fox, red panda,
meerkat, smooth-coated otter, small-clawed otter, Patagonian sealion, African
elephant, white rhino, maneless zebra, pygmy hippo, reticulated giraffe, blue
duiker, reindeer, llama, aardvark, giant anteater, southern tamandua, Linne’s
two-toed sloth, ostrich, Darwin’s rhea, Ruppel’s griffon vulture, king vulture,

flamingo, Humboldt penguin, Komodo dragon, rhinoceros iguana, green iguana, giant
Asian pond turtle, Burmese python, false tomato frog, poison dart frog, Mexican
red-kneed tarantula, Brazilian salmon pink bird-eating spider and owl butterfly
among others and these in turn are nicely balanced by the inclusion of some
concise and interesting information on all the species mentioned above, as well
as other information along with accompanying photographs titled ‘Action For The
Wild’, ‘Africa’, ‘Animals on The Move’, ‘UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve’, ‘Asia’,
‘Australasia’, ‘Europe’, ‘North America’, ‘South America’ and ‘Discovery and
Learning’. Its pages are set out in an interesting format, and being unused, is
in ‘like new/basically ‘new’ condition. Its format is quite substantial and as
guide books go, its quality is impressive and is without doubt, an unusual and
uncommon zoo guide book that should definitely be of interest to all collectors
of zoo guides and zoo memorabilia in general. It really would be a superb
addition to any zoo guide and general zoo memorabilia collection alike, so snap
it up while you can, as this edition in such wonderful condition, doesn’t come
along very often and it will certainly not disappoint.
