The subject of this biography, Brigadier General Charles McGee, has signed and inscribed this book on the front flyleaf in black ink pen. The inscription reads: "Air Venture 2003  To: Ed  Fair winds!  Charles E. McGee". AirVenture is the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) annual fly-in convention, which was held July 29-August 4, 2003 at their headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

With a long career flying in the Army Air Corp and Air Force, McGee earned many commendations and awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, the Congressional Gold Medal, and was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. He started his college career at the University of Illinois in Champaign before his training at Tuskegee. McGee passed away at 102 in 2022.
