Why Promo and Test Pressings are important:

There are many factors that determine if a pressing has good sonics such as; quality of the recording equipment and placement, master tape, mastering engineer, mastering quality and technique, vinyl compound quality, pressing plant, early pressing, original issue vs. re-issue and of course, condition. The biggest factor, and most over-looked when determining the quality of the sound, is the pressing order. In other words, was the record pressed when the stamper was new, or after thousands of pressings when the stamper was worn out. The only way to determine whether a record was pressed when the stamper was fresh and crisp is to listen to the record and compare it to other copies of equal condition. That said, "promotional copies" and "dj copies" and "Test Pressings" were pressed before general release, or early in the release, and therefore it can be assured with confidence, that the pressing was made with a fresh stamper.
