I am extremely pleased to offer this beautiful, exquisitely hand decorated and seldom seen King George VI 1937 Coronation commemorative Demitasse Coffee Can & Saucer Set, which is lavishly hand decorated with enamels and gold gilding by Paragon’s Master Artist J/A/ Robinson,  and the saucer is signed by him.

Paragon produced 3 different 1937 Coffee Can & Saucer designs, one for King Edward VIII, and 2 for King George VI, and I shall be offering an example of each, with this listing being for one of the King George VI designs, the other two designs will be listed separately.

The Coffee Can, which is 2½ inches high, has a 2 inch diameter rim and a 1½ inch diameter base, is lavishly decorated with the Royal Coat of Arms of King George VI, below which is his Royal Monogram ‘GRI’ standing for Georgius Rex Imperator (Latin for George King Emperor), and the Coronation date of May 12 1937. The lip and rim are embellished with gold gilding, as are the handle and the rim of the base. The body of the Coffee Can is profusely decorated with a mass of rose pink and pale blue floral designs.

The Coffee Can’s base has a Paragon backstamp with the inscription “A Perpetual Souvenir in Paragon China To Commemorate The Coronation of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Crowned Westminster Abbey May 12 1937”.

The 4½ inch diameter Saucer has a beautifully hand decorated central King George VI Royal Coat of Arms set on a background of a mass of rose pink and pale blue floral designs. The scalloped rim of the Saucer is heavily gold gilded with this lavish hand decoration being the work of Paragon’s Master Artist, J. A. Robinson, and is signed by him.

The Saucer’s base has a Paragon backstamp with the inscription “A Perpetual Souvenir in Paragon China To Commemorate The Coronation of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Crowned Westminster Abbey May 12 1937”.

Originally, it was intended that King Edward VIII be Crowned on 12th May 1937, however, after an exceedingly short reign of just 326 days, King Edward VIII abdicated on 11th December 1936, so that he could marry the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

Immediately King Edward VIII abdicated, his younger brother Albert was proclaimed King George VI, and with plans for a Coronation on 12th May 1937 having already been completed, it was decided to still proceed with the Coronation on that date, with King George VI being crowned at Westminster Abbey instead of the abdicated King Edward VIII.

With many companies having already finalized their plans to manufacture, distribute and sell Coronation souvenirs for King Edward VIII’s Coronation, they now had to scramble to produce those same Coronation souvenirs for the new King George VI, and all work on Paragon’s King Edward VIII’s commemoratives were immediately suspended and never resumed, consequently some Paragon King Edward VIII items are very scarce as is this Coffee Can & Saucer set, which is in superb pristine condition damage.

Over the coming days, I shall be listing many other rare and interesting historical items from my personal collection which I have collected over the past 40+ years, so please click on the ‘See other items’ tab/link on the top right of the listing to view the many other items I have listed.
