Solid Silver Trefid  Rat Tail Spoon. 

Hallmarked: Chester 1953. 

Silversmith: Lowe & Son.

This is a solid sterling silver trefid or trefoil or deer foot spoon in the manner of the French 17th Century originals. The deep oval bowl, flat handle thickened towards the bowl and with a rat tail on to the underside of the bowl providing additional strength this spoon was produced by the Chester silversmith Lowe & Son in 1953 as the hallmarking proves. 

Unfortunately not one of the early examples but well produced exhibiting elements of those 17th Century examples.

Length - 14.5 cm. (5.7 inch.).

Weight: 26.4 grams.

Marks: Stamped to the reverse of the handle with the hallmark which comprises of the Lion Passant, the 3 Wheat sheaves of the City of Chester, The Head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right and the Date Letter 'C' for the Year 1953. Alongside is the silversmith's mark 'G O F' over Lo
for George Frederick Lowe & Son of Bridge Street Row, Chester.

Condition: Excellent. No damage, repair or restoration.
