Exquisite Decorative Delicate PEDESTAL DEMITASSE CUP & SAUCER Set, HAND PAINTED Green BIRDS w/WHITE HIGHLIGHTS & Raised GOLD, from Occupied Japan, circa 1946-1952
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand decorated pedestal demitasse cup & saucer set was produced with delicate satin yellow paint on the high white of the porcelain. Both pieces have the same raised gold decoration and raised white highlights. The green birds are truly beautiful and the raised gold outlining on the raised white flowers makes this look like a piece of art. The design looks so classic. The fancy handle and pedestal on the cup are trimmed in gold. The smooth rims are trimmed in gold. This makes a beautiful display set or can be used everyday as a functional set.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold or paint.
DIMENSIONS: The smooth rimmed demitasse cup has a diameter of 2 15/16" with a height of 1 15/16" and a capacity of 2 ounces. The height to the top of the handle is 2 1/16". The deep saucer has a diameter of 4 5/8" while its height is 3/4".
HISTORY/MARKS: The Shofu family of pottery artists began about 1861 with Shofu Yoshisada in Kyoto. Yoshisada developed the family business into a thriving Kyoto porcelain ware manufacturing company during the Meiji era (September, 1868 through July, 1912). In 1906, the company was re-organized by Shofu Katei III and he also established a factory in Nagoya. The company was known as Shofu Toki Goshi Kaisha or the Shofu Porcelain Manufacturing Company. By 1915, Katei was president of the company. The company developed into a major manufacturer and exporter of porcelain ware and dental products. The mark on this set is for Shofu China Nagoya, Japan Made in Occupied Japan which dates this set to the 1946-1952 time period.
