What is the Chintamani:
This
sign, which is considered to be the symbol of the Buddha, which is
called "tama" in the Chinese and the Japanese, entered the Turkish
tradition by taking Sultan Tabal (1514) of Tabriz and bringing the
artisans there to Istanbul, and after the 15th century, in many branches
of the Turkish handicrafts used.
This motif, originating from
central Asia, consists of two wavy lines stretching side by side and 3
round spots, two at the bottom and one at the top. The Japanese and the
Chinese believe that these three spots, which they interpret as pearls,
show Buddha's three spiritual qualities.
In the Çintemanis used
in the Ottoman palaces, these three spots were used in the caftans of
princes as a symbol of power, reign and abundance.
In the study,
three circular spots are sometimes used alone, and sometimes they are
used by giving a motif and a crescent shape with the circles drawn in
this spot. It is also used with another motif that takes the names of
lightning, cloud and post.
