Functional pottery was being manufactured in Havana – today’s Montour Falls – in the mid-1850s, but production was at its peak from the early 1860s to the late 1880s. A.O. Whittemore Sr., a New York City businessman with varied interests, purchased Havana’s existing stoneware works in December 1862. He operated the factory until his death in July 1885. His son, A.O. Whittemore Jr., took over the stoneware and other businesses. But, when Whittemore Jr. died in October 1888, the manufacture of stoneware in Havana ended.
