Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. According to the Noritake Collectors Guild, the Maruki symbol is the corporation motif of the Morimura Kumi Group of Companies. The Maruki symbol was used not only for Morimura backstamps, but also for Noritake backstamps. Joan Van Patten, in ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, lists this as mark #180 used since 1912. This implies that this piece is from 1912-1918.
The Maruki mark is on the bottom of the bowl, but not on the underplate. The two pieces are obviously hand painted to be a set. This is not unusual for one of the pieces to be unmarked.
The condition of this round mayonnaise bowl and its underplate is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines. The gold appears to be close to perfect--highlighting the smooth rims and the geometric patterning on the inside of the bowl. Only on the inside of the bowl do we find slight wear to some of the thin gold lines--probably over the years of use as a mayonnaise bowl a ladle has worn the side gold lines slightly.
Please inspect the photos carefully and you will see just how good the gold is overall. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky. The artwork on this is beautiful with the floral designs painted over the geometric yellow bars. The artist was very good as the bowl looks beautiful and appears to be in fine condition.
The bowl stands 2 3/8" high sitting on its underplate and the bowl itself is 2 1/16" high. The bowl's diameter is 4 1/2" while the diameter of the underplate is 5 3/8".
Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description. The stand was used as a photo prop and is not part of this listing.
