Up for auction is an extremely rare Renaissance-era intact vellum papal bull with attached lead seal/bulla. This bull was issued under the reign of infamous Medici Pope Leo X (1513-21). The subject matter in Latin text is addressed to Master Hector de Rubeus of Darney, and it contains a grant of indulgence made to the Augustinian Abbey of St. Peter in Celo Aureo, Pavia. This particular bull is dated March 15, 1518...one year after Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Church. It measures approximately 270 x 475 mm.

The attached lead seal (bulla) is in quite nice condition. Leo's seal is unique as it depicts the coat of arms of the House of Medici on the obverse.

Unfortunately, much of the text appears to be fading (though still legible). Still, intact papal bulls from this era are exceedingly rare in any condition, and one from one of the most controversial popes in history is even more desirable.
