1390 -1983 Ukraine CITY OF SAMBIR (SAMBOR) SEAL 78mm AE MEDAL - Jewish Interest!

This huge 78mm and heavy 170g AE uniface medal represents the City Seal of Sambir (Sambor) located in war torn Ukraine. In 1390, Nowy Sambor received the status of a town, which attracted Ruthenians, Poles, Germans, and Jews to the locality.

Jewish interest - In 1889, the most fruitful period, there were 4,427 Jews – 32.6 percent of the total population of 13, 586. In the vicinity of Sambor, there were some 500 weavers of cloth; Jewish dealers would bring their goods to the farmers in the neighborhood of Brod. Jews had the monopoly of the hard drinks trade in Sambor and the vicinity. In 1820, a Jew established a private bank.

There were around 8,000 Jews living in the town of Sambor in 1939, predominantly in the city-centre. There was a Jewish school and a synagogue. The Jews were merchants, craftsmen and artisans. In World War II the Nazis created the Sambor Ghetto and almost the entire population of the Jewish community were murdered during the Holocaust.
