Collection of 23 Antique Books from the Estate of President Abraham Lincoln's Financial Advisor ( During the Civil War ) Christie's Auction House
** All Books are generally in great condition considering the age however the condition varies depending on the set. Please view my listing's description for a total breakdown of the condition for more accuracy. The Greece Set is the only set that is not in good condition.
** These Books were part of a book collection that was auctioned off at Christies on 4/6/1982, as part of the Harris Fahnestock estate. He was a financial advisor to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and later was a co-founder of Citigroup. Some of the sets have the original bookmarks from that day at Christies, others do not. Books are individually wrapped in the cover photo because i initially thought i was going to sell them all individually, but i changed my mind. It doesn't make sense to undo all the special wrapping work i did for a cover photo. One book from this collection sold at an auction house (not ebay) for $9500 with the buyers premium, but individually none of the other books made the cut as far as high end value goes, but it's nice to know something special came from this collection. The book was the first english edition copy of Democracy in America, 1835, 1 of 500 printed.
Items in this lot include the following:
- 1900s AMERICAN REVOLUTION Book Set TREVELYAN 4 Volumes (Charles James Fox & Volumes 1,2,and 6) Special Edition Series Most Likely
** CJ Fox may have some faint water marks, there seems to be a remnant but the book is so old and the mark so faint, it's hard to tell. Pencil inscription claims this book is a first edition and rare. CJ Fox has an article clipping inside that has stained the pages from age. The Maps are intact.
**Every Book is inscribed "EB Mauler 1880/ No 22". Spots on Cover, as in photos. Signs of Age and Wear but overall Excellent Condition, in my opinion.
** Talks about the ancient history of the Egyptians, Carthoginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes, Persians, Macedonians, and Grecians
** Heavy Soiling, more on top where they were exposed over the years. Volume 7 is missing the cover, Volume 8, 9 and 10 have loose covers, and Volume 11 is intact. In general, besides the separated covers, they are in good to acceptable condition. Book Bindings seem to be on track for the same fate if not careful. The colors on the swirl design are very vibrant and rich considering the age.
- Berlin, 1832. Gedrudt und Verlegt bei B. Reimer (Published by B. Reimer).
** Dusty and Very old, but seems to be in amazing condition in my opinion
** Lots of Aging, Signs of Age and Wear. Light Brown spots on map and some of the pages, as in photos.
** Book Plate reads "D.C. Ansted" and a little sticker in the corner that reads "James Galt & Co. Manchester"
