A monumental collection of Spain Rodriguez’s influential Trashman underground comix strips, which originally appeared in the East Village Other. With Trashman, Rodriguez (and the pseudonymic Algernon Backwash, credited with writing), blends the pulpy EC horror style of Wally Wood and the work of radical contemporaries like Robert Crumb with the nascent aesthetic of street art and vitally revolutionary leftist politics. The strips collected here follow Trashman through a dystopian urban wasteland as he murders crooked cops, anachronistic Nazis, the upper class, and anyone else who gets in his way of overthrowing the fascist oppressor in power. Rodriguez uses innovative techniques throughout, such as collaging newspaper text into cityscapes and breaking the fourth wall, the influence of which can be seen in decades of comics since, both underground and mainstream alike. Presenting the strip for the first time and in a manner true to the artist’s vision, Fat City and Red Mountain Tribe’s The Collected Trashman is a formative document of an essential entry in the tradition of underground comix.
