Nippon TE-OH Cider Pitcher & 2 Mugs Cobalt Roses w/Gold Hand Painted 1891-1918
Exquisite Decorative NIPPON CIDER PITCHER w/2 Matching MUGS, Hand Painted CABBAGE ROSES w/Blue Ribbons Having WHITE MORIAGE & SMALL BEADING w/Gold SCROLLWORK, TE-OH mark from Nagoya Seito. in Nagoya, Japan, circa 1891-1918
DESCRIPTION: This antique cider pitcher has the dark cobalt blue trim near the rims and on the handles. The part near the rims has the gold scrollwork. The roses are skillfully hand painted as delicate pink, magenta and orange flowers with the light blue ribbon flowing through the flowers. The flowers are drawn nestled in their green leaves and have a gold scrollwork design behind them. (As a farm raised girl, I would call this chicken wire!) The handles are decorated with gold stripes. The inside of the pitcher is white porcelain, but has some of the cobalt color showing. See the photo #10.
CONDITION: The condition of this decorative cider set is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There is no paint or gold wear except the age appropriate gold wear on the pitcher handle. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is.
DIMENSIONS: The cider pitcher has a maximum diameter of 7 3/8". The measurement from handle to spout is 8 3/4" and the height is 6 1/4". Its capacity is 11 cups. The mugs have a height of 3 3/4" and a diameter of 2 3/4". The measurement from the handle to the opposite side is 3 5/8" with a capacity of 6 ounces.
HISTORY/MARKS: The mark on the bottom of these is Nippon China TE-OH which Joan Van Patten's ABC's of Collecting Nippon Porcelain calls mark #7 and cites it as used in the 1891-1918 time period. Some read this mark as JE-OH instead of TE-OH China. It designates Nagoya Seito which became Nagoya Seitosho, producers of Meito China in Nagoya, Japan.
