DESCRIPTION: The beautiful scalloped rim decorative large oval platter was painted by a talented artist using the pink, green and blue color palate on an ivory background. The pink, single petaled Cherokee Roses are beautifully hand painted and look so fetching. The trim on the rim is a band of gold which widens to form the gold daubs of the Racine mold. This mold was purchased from Haviland & Co. in 1931 and was their most popular mold, named Ranson after its designer. (Haviland repurchased the right to use the molds years later.)
CONDITION: While this large oval platter is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear on the gold or any utensil marks.
DIMENSIONS: The oval platter is 13 5/8" by 9 7/8" with a height of 1 1/2" at the top of the handle.
HISTORY/MARKS: The Hutschenreuther porcelain story began when Karl Magnus Hutschenreuther, 1793-1845, discovered kaolin in northeastern Bavaria in 1814 where he established his company. His son Lorenz managed the Hohenberg porcelain factory from 1845-1857. He founded his own Hutschenreuther Porcelain Company in Selb in 1856 which became highly successful and 113 years later absorbed his father’s company. All of the Hutschenreuther Companies were trend setters of high quality porcelain. Hutschenreuther became known for the love of detail, distinctive brilliance of color, and lustrous beauty shown through the decorating of the fine porcelain pieces. The mark on this oval platter is that of the Hutschenreuther Company of Selb, Bavaria. The Hutschenreuther webpage (PM&M) porzellansammlung cites this mark as used 1925-1939, but based on the use of the Racine mold we can narrow the production period to 1932-1939.
