Exquisite Decorative CUP & SAUCER, HAND PAINTED Purple VIOLETS & White LILY of the VALLEY FLOWERS w/Green LEAVES & GOLD Trim, from Suhl, Prussia, Germany, circa 1910
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted cup & saucer set was produced with beautiful purple violets and white lily of the valley with green leaves and gold trim. The design looks so classic. The ghost lily of the valley flowers are made by a reverse painting technique that paints the darker colors around the flower shape such that the flower is actually the high white of the porcelain. Then the light grey is applied to give shape to the flowers and the yellow accents the centers of the flowers. The handle has a solid gold stripe down the center of the handle and stippled gold on both sides of the handle. All of the rims are trimmed in gold and stippled gold. Both the cup and saucer are scalloped rimmed and embossed. The cup is on a fluted mold. The violets are absolutely beautiful (and one of our favorite flowers). This makes a beautiful display set or can be used everyday.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold. See the photos. This is delicate weighing only 5.6 ounces.
DIMENSIONS: The cup has a diameter of 3 1/4" with a maximum diameter of 3 1/2". The height is 2 1/8" with a capacity of 4 ounces. The saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2" and height of 5/8".
The "RS" initials stand for Reinhold Schlegelmilch, founder of the porcelain factory specializing in hard paste porcelain at Suhl in Prussia which is present-day Germany. The work of his two sons, Arnold and Erhard, made the mark bearing his initials famous. Arnold operated the Suhl factory while Erhard established a porcelain factory in Tillowitz, Germany in 1894. Arnold closed the porcelain factory in Suhl in December 1917, due to World War I and a shortage of people skilled in the making of such hard paste porcelain. He joined Erhard at the Tillowitz factory which operated as part of Reinhold Schlegelmilch Enterprise until the death in 1934 of both brothers. The factory in Tillowitz remained opened under Schlegelmilch control (under sons of Arnold and finally Arnold’s granddaughter) until 1945 when it came under the administration of Poland after WWII. The cup has RS Germany mark Green Wreath that is cited in Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of RS Prussia, 4th edition as mark #9from the Tillowitz, Germany factory used 1910-1945. The saucer has the red star green wreath overglaze mark was used from 1888-1910 at the Suhl, Germany factory. This mark is cited in Leland & Carol Marple's R.S. Prussia The Wreath and Star as registered March 27, 1905 and replaced in 1910 when Prussia was changed to Germany on the mark. The saucer also has the BT Co Shield and Crown for the importer mark of Burley & Tyrrell Co. under brand name B T & Co. This is cited as used in the 1890-1919 time period according to Dr. James D. Henderson in his book, Bohemian Decorated Porcelain on whiteware for importer Burley & Tyrrell from Germany. This sets the circa for this set is 1910.
