One of just 16 examples left in the UK.

Mechanical

The car runs and drives well. Thanks to the huge binder of history, you can see it has been well cared for mechanically by its previous owners. The vehicle also benefits from several engine upgrades including K&N air filters and Weber single carb. The car has been in dry storage for over 5 years and is off the road, hence there is no current MOT. The suspension is lowered by 30mm and is free of any knocks. The car is fitted with a stainless steel rear box exhaust which sounds fantastic! The new owner may need to spend to get the car back on the road but a fresh MOT will be provided if the auction reserve price is met.

Exterior

In average condition overall. The car is free of any major dents or scratches. It is in its original colour of Monaco blue and is set off nicely with a set of BBS decals/stripes. It had a respray in 2015 that has not been done to a great standard. The car still shines and is presentable for a 42-year-old car but it would benefit from a full respray. The car has lacquer peal in places, some small car park-type dings, paint flake on the front wing, some rust spots, signs of repair work and general age-related marks across the bodywork. The paintwork is the area of the car that requires the most attention. This is not a concourse example by any means but it is presentable and useable. Given its rarity and provenance, it always gets lots of attention at car shows. The car shell is solid with no major rust.

Interior

In very good condition. The dash is free of any cracks. The front seats are upgraded to Golf GTI and are in great condition with a few light marks. The rear seats have an in-period cover over them to fit with the style of the car as the original seats have some rips in them. An aftermarket head unit from Pioneer is fitted with Android Auto. The heating controls have been moved to the lower part of the centre console but not fitted due to a missing blanking plate. The car headlining is in great condition and to top off the interior you have a Pool Ball gear shifter and a rare Wolfsburg edition steering wheel!

Alloys & Tyres

In very good condition overall. The alloys are genuine 13” BBS split rims. They are presentable but could do with a refurb to bring the chrome lips back to a high standard. One of the BBS centre caps is missing. Tyres all have plenty of thread but they are old tyres, so could benefit from changing soon.

Service History

Impressive history documentation. This is where I don't think you will find an example with this sort of provenance and corresponding paperwork. The original bill of sale is in the binder full of service and repair receipts. The first owner paying £4,000 for the car brand new on 28/5/81.

Lots of money has been spent on the car during its lifetime. Below is the documentation available within the cars ring binder as an invoice or service stamp.

The car has mainly been serviced at its local main dealer in Portsmouth and then by the owner himself. Over the last 5 years (and during long periods of its life), the car has spent time in dry storage and has been owned by enthusiasts visiting many community shows.

In conclusion

This is a low owner and low mileage genuine honest example of a rare and collectable VW Jetta L Mk1. It has been tastefully modified by its previous owner.  Please don't expect a concourse car. This is a 42-year-old car but it still cleans up very well for it’s age. With a bit of money spent on it and a respray, this could be a show winner.
