OK I challenge you to find a second copy of this amazing survivor. Hand made and clearly hand punched tin "Loving Cup" commemorating the completion of telegraph service to the Detroit area in 1848. Found in the basement of an antique home in St. John, MI I confess I didn't understand the meaning of this cup when I first found it. A Google search reveled the the Eastern Line of telegraph service arrived in Detroit in 1848. Clearly this "Award" was created to celebrate the men who strung the lines that connected Detroit to the East. Inside a "Federal Shield" design (popular in the 1840's) is hand punched the words "TO OUR OUTSTANDING LINEMEN 1848 SDSW" . I don't know what the initials SDSW refer to but it is clear that the linemen of 1848 were the pioneers of Telegraph installation.

Cup is 6 3/4" tall with an opening at top of 3 1/3". The body of the cup is metal, likely steel or tin. The handles are brass, Just an extraordinary piece of history and a wonderful Folk Art Trophy.
