A favorite of Milwaukee Road and steam fans is back with the fabulous S3 Northern! Built in 1944 for fast freight service on the Milwaukee's mainlines, the S3's brilliant careers were cut short by diesels in 1954. Thankfully, two have been saved and since her return to operation, No. 261 has logged thousands of miles in her new role as an ambassador and educator for steam heritage and technology. Lionel's re-release of this stunning model includes innovative features like cylinder steam and a kinematic drawbar, steam whistle sounds, air horn sounds, and working red emergency light on the smokebox. "Lackawanna" " 1661 pays tribute to a role played by the 261 in 1994, standing in as a DL&W Pocono for a Steamtown video. While wartime production lent itself to more austere paint schemes, no doubt one of these beauties would have been a fitting and stunning match to the railroad's Hiawatha passenger trains.
