SUPERB LARGE 19TH CENTURY CRYSTAL GOBLET
WITH GOTHIC STYLE CUT BOWL AND CUT AIRTRAP STEM

This superb large crystal  goblet (it has a lovely ring) with excellent cutting was almost certainly produced in England by one of the top glassmakers. This glass was hand blown. The airtrap stem, which involves trapping a bubble of air inside the stem, became popular from the 1840s through to the Edwardian period. At first look the bowl appears to have been etched but this is not the case. The decoration has been produced on a cutting wheel with most of the decoration left with a matt finish and some areas, such as the small circles on the stem, polished bright. The quality of the decoration is outstanding albeit understated. The band of curling wave effect around the top of the bowl would have required the highest standard of craftsmanship to produce such a consistently accurate pattern. The decoration on the baluster shaped stem is of an equally high standard. The underside of the foot has been decorated with a 24 point star cut.

The glass is in excellent condition. It is26.6 cm high with a capacity of380 ml, so it can hold over half a standard bottle of wine.

I will be listing a number of similar large goblets all of which are large enough for the most enthusiastic wine drinker. Each is a statement glass in its own right. Just imagine the impact of assembling a harlequin set of several different glasses. There would be no excuse for picking up the wrong glass - unless one had too many glasses and by then it might not matter.

Happy to answer and questions or provide more photos. The glass can be collected from Langford in North Somerset.
