Geyser Reef (French: Banc du Geyser or Banc du Geysir) is a coral reef almost completely hidden by water in the northeastern part of the Mozambique Channel. Geyser Reef was first known to Arab sailors around 700 and was shown on some navigational charts dating back to around 800. Around 1650 the reef was shown on Spanish maps as: Spanish. Arecife de Santo Antonio. On December 23, 1678, the British ship Geysir struck the reef, after which it received its modern name. France and Comoros claim the Banc du Geyser as part of their exclusive economic zone. Madagascar announced its annexation of the reef in 1976, supposedly due to the possibility of oil fields nearby. In 2012, France included the reef in the Marine de Glorieuse Natural Park, a marine protected area, to preserve endangered flora and fauna.
