Sweet and dainty pair of sterling silver drop earrings,
each featuring a round, highly-polished, faceted amethyst and a teardrop-shaped natural
moonstone, all suspended from a silver French wire. They are stamped on the
reverse for sterling silver.
Amethyst is a variety of quartz, with various hues
from lilac to deep purple and it has captivated mankind for centuries, with the
stone found in the collections of royal families throughout Europe and Asia,
with Catherine the Great of Russia particularly fond of the gemstone. It is the
gem traditionally given for the sixth wedding anniversary as well as being the
birthstone for the month of February.
Moonstone, an alternative birthstone for June, was
named after "moonshine" because of its bluish-white shimmery
appearance like the moon although it can also throw off a weak bluish/orange
fluorescence. This gem ranges in appearance from semi-transparent to opaque and
colourless to white, with a blue, silver, or white, milky iridescence effect.
These are a lovely little treasure and would be a much
appreciated present for a February or June birthday or as an unusual addition
to any jewellery collection.
