This auction is for a rare vintage signed and dated hand woven bread fruit berry basket by the late Colonial Williamsburg master basket maker William Leroy “Roy” Black (1940-2021). The bottom of the basket is signed ROY BLACK. 4-2000. The signature and date appear to have been burned into the basket. We believe the basket is made from white oak as it was the preferred material used by Colonial Williamsburg basket makers. And as the original tag would have said, “This item was handmade in the eighteenth-century manner by a costumed Colonial Williamsburg craftsman or woman working before the public.”The basket stands roughly 14 1/2” in height to the top of the handle. The basket measures roughly 21 1/4” x 13 1/4” x 3 1/4” at its furthest points not including the handle. The basket weighs 1 lb 15.2 oz. The basket has a great patina and appears to be in overall good shape. The basket does have aging, dirty and/or dusty areas, and general wear as to be found with these types of items. The basket also has cracking to the individual strands in several places where they change angles abruptly (see pictures). This rare vintage signed and dated hand woven bread fruit berry basket by master basket maker William Leroy “Roy” Black is sure to be a nice addition to your collection. We do our best to properly describe an item, but please take a close look at the pictures to assess condition (mouse over to zoom, click to enlarge).
