Original WW1 British Army Letter regarding a VICTORIA CROSS won by Sgt Oliver Brooks at HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT, LOOS.

The first part of the letter sets out the methods used at HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT when carrying out a series of daring 'BOMBING ATTACKS' (ie MILLS GRENADES). The second half contains details of Sgt Brooks' valour during such an attack in the face of vastly superior numbers, successfully clearing out German troops from a stretch of captured British frontline.

It finishes with reference to Brooks receiving his VC from the King tomorrow, and plans for the men to walk a mile to see the King.

However.....although undated, this single detail actually dates the letter to the 28th October 1915, the same day that the King (who was in France at the time) was thrown from his horse and broke his pelvis. Apparently, despite being advised to travel home immediately, the King insisted on Brooks being brought to his bedside so that he could present the medal himself as originally planned. So it would seem that the rest of the men didn't actually get to see him after all.

Produced on official King's Crown watermarked Stationery Office paper.

From a rare archive of fascinating WW1 documents I have in my possession, relating to various aspects of trench warfare. They have survived well, with some areas of rust staining from paper clips and pins due to a century of lying in storage.

In excellent condition.
