Limoges Fish Set KB Imperial 12 Piece Platter Plates Gravy Boat 1887 HandPainted

Limoges Fish Set KB Imperial 12 Piece Platter Plates Gravy Boat 1887 HandPainted

Elegant Decorative FISH SET imported from Limoges, France by Koscherak Bros. of New York, Ornate Hand Painted FISH w/FLOWERS, Wide Bright GREEN WASH at Rims w/GOLD on Rim, circa 1887-early 1900's

DESCRIPTION:  This set was designed in a very classic pattern with the fish swimming in water and enhanced by the beauty of the floating aquatic flowers.  The mold used looks like embossed, scalloped shells on the rim.  The overall quality of the design is quite professional.  The gold trim on the rim is very rich looking and fades into stippled gold on the green wash.  This is heavily scalloped and ornately embossed.  The artist was very talented and it appears all pieces were painted by the same artist.

CONDITION:
This set appears to have seldom been used.  While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb.  We can find no defects and very little damage.  One plate of the 6 has what appears to be some stacking wear to the paint.  See photos #10 and #11.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, other rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines.  Overall, the gold trim is solid & glossy.  See the photos.

DIMENSIONS:

  •  The oval platter is 23 3/4" by 9 3/4" with a height of 2 1/2".  It weighs 80.5 ounces by itself.
  • The 3 plate group has a diameter of 9" and a height of 1 1/4".
  • The 6 plate group has a diameter of 9 1/4" and a height of 1 1/8".
  • The gravy boat oval underplate is 9 1/2" by 6" and a height of 1 1/4".
  • The gravy boat handle to spout is 8" with a width of 3 3/4" and a height to the top of the handle of 4 5/8".

HISTORY/MARKS:  Importer KB (Koscherak Bros.) in New York, New York used their Imperial Limoges importer marks on high quality porcelain which was known for the exquisite hand painted decorations.  We have seen items that have the KB Imperial decorator mark that were also stamped JPL (Jean Pouyat), MR (Martial Redon) Guerin and others.  Advertisements in the periodical, “The Pottery, Glass and Brass Salesman” for March 1919 states that KB was established in 1887. We have seen an ad in “The Home Furnishing Review” for September 1899 that  referred to KB as one of the largest importers of crockery.  In the 1950’s -1970’s, KB was at 225 Fifth Avenue in New York importing Murano Glass and as of 2017 are still listed in the NYC business directory as manufacturing, production & wholesale of gift & novelty items at 448 W. 16th Street, New York.  We estimate based on style, weight and feel of the porcelain that this was produced, decorated, and imported in the late 1890’s to just prior to WWI.  This is the same mold on the 3 plates as a platter made by AK in Limoges France mark #2 used 1880’s-1890’s.  Mary Frances Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain Page 217 Plate #523 shows a bird plate on the same mold as the set of 3 plates.  On this information, we set the circa to be 1887-1910.

SHIPPING DETAILS:  Due to the size of this set, we will need to ship in 3 boxes for the safety of the antique porcelain.  The plates will be shipped in one box, with the platter in another, and the gravy boat and underplate in a 3rd box.  We will use ample bubble wrap, foam and packing peanuts.  We expect the three packages to weigh approximately 25 pounds.  We have been very successful with our shipping of delicate, fragile items; check our feedback!
