A spectacular original WW2 British Army Engineer's 'pack mule' side panel (for use with a general service mule saddle) which was designed for carrying hand tools such as axes, billhooks, mattocks etc.

There were several different kinds of panel set ups, depending on the load being carried, but the use of such tools would suggest that this was more suited to one of the leading animals in a 'pack train' as it gave handy access to vital ground clearing tools when encountering more awkward terrain.

Judging by the 'OFF' stamp beneath the date, it appears that this would have been mounted on the 'off side' (i.e. right side) of the animal, with a different design of panel for other equipment carried on the 'near side' (left).

Dated 1945 and clearly unissued, it's in beautiful condition for its age and would make a real statement piece in any WW2 or equestrian themed collection.

All the straps are present as they are heavily riveted into place.

It's a large and heavy piece, measuring approximately 80cm x 63cm, hence 'Parcelforce' being used for shipping.
