Zulimo Aretini [Monte San Savino, Italy 1884- Rome Italy, 1965] was an Italian potter who is still incredibly well known and respected for his magnificent artistry, skill, flair, and his determination to single handedly bring back the traditional method of Sgraffito carving to Italian pottery.

Sgraffito is a technique of scratching or carving directly into the wet clay before firing.

Aretini came from a very famous Italian pottery making family and after apprenticing, opened his first studio in 1929. Many Art critics feel that these early Medici style bird vases are amongst his best works created.

His works are going up in value yearly, and often sold at Art Auctions to Museums and serious collectors.

This particular vase is in a style he focused on in the very early 1930s. This style was known for fantastic birds, greenery, flowers, and geometric forms, all painted and glazed in rich jewel tones. He called this pottery Medici Style and used the inspiration of Renaissance Italian masterworks to guide him.

Hand formed polychrome pottery, hand painted/glazed in glorious shades of Majolica colors. Sgraffito etchings in pottery. 4 large handles at top. See all pics and use zoom.

Signed by sgraffito method [and numbered] on base. 'MADE IN ITALY - ARETINI 276' with his signature crescent moon shaped symbol

Excellent antique condition- there one very minor flake off of UNDERSIDE which is not visible when vase is standing on table, plus a small rub wear spot to glaze alongside one of the handles- super minor- as normal for age. See last 2 pics. No nicks chips cracks damage or repair. There is a thin line down one side of the foot, but this is totally filled in with fired glaze and it's simply a feature the artist used to make his pieces look aged- it is not a crack and it is NOT damage.

This is a stunning piece- great for a collector

Very heavy, weighted and sturdy.

Remember, these are vintage items and will have reasonable signs of age and wear which only adds to their personality, appeal and "funky vintage-ness". They are not in their original boxes unless noted. I do not excessively clean items or remove age patina, as I want to leave that option for the buyer.
