Vintage Kōzanji maki-e Chōjū Giga Chabako Set for Japanese Tea Ceremony. This is a fantastic chabako with Kōzanji maki-e of the famous Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga 鳥獣人物戯画, lit. "Animal-person Caricatures" painted from 12th and 13th centuries with lacquer work by Yakumo-nuri 八雲塗. Kōzanji Temple and area of Togano-o are famous for planting the original tea plants brought to Japan by Eisai at the end of the 12th c. The chabako has a specially made kiribako. All items listed are sized for chabako. The set includes: kizue and wakei-ita, 4 chawan (E-garatsu, Izumo, Kiseto, Hori Mishima), a very fiine matching set of Shunkei-nuri hira natsume, kōgō and bentwood chasen tsutsu; Hakugyoku Donsu shifuku set for natsume, chawan and chashaku; 1 pair of metal hashi; 3 habōki feathers; 3 chashaku, 2 chasen (1 new); 1 new chakin, 1 uguisu pin, 2 extra furidashi (1 glass and 1 mitate made from a spice container); and 2 bags of kompeito. All items are in very good to excellent condition. The top lid of the chabako has some faint scratches from use and the interior has a small dent from use.
