PCGS has graded a Grand Total of 63 coins for this date and denomination in ALL GRADES, and ZERO in Miont State. That's right, the finest coin graded for the 1888 Newfoundland Half Dollar by PCGS is a pair (2) of AU58's. And only 9 coins are graded AU50 or finer.
Tough Coin!
This coin, like most in the series, is vastly under rated. Most of the sales records and data are from 3-15 years ago.
This date has a very low original mintage of a mere 20,000 coins. Seldom offered, and exceedingly under-valued, these rarely offered Newfoundland Half Dollars have nothing but upside as far as appreciation goes. NGC Price guide shows this coin to be worth $11,000 in MS60 (I don't know if any mint state graded coins even exist for this date).
These coins are .925 fine silver with an ASW of 0.1734 troy oz silver.
