CROWN IMPERIAL Coronation March William Walton Arr.Herbert  Murrill

This popular march was first performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the coronation of King George VI in 1937 and, more recently, at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. This a highly communicative music surges with irrepressible energy and mounts to a heroic climax.

The words ‘Crown Imperial’ are taken from Dunbar’s poem, ‘In honour of the City of London’.

At first, many music critics implied that Walton had abandoned his compositional integrity when he composed the work, and another said that the piece would not last. As it turned out, it became one of Walton’s best loved and enduring pieces and is now generally admired as a highly successful synthesis between the musical template of the Elgarian march and Walton’s personal style, replete with dazzling flourishes and piquant harmonies. Crown Imperial is a staple at royal occasions, and was played at Queen Elizabeth's  own coronation, as well as Prince William and Catherine's wedding in 2011. 

This arrangement for organ is by English organist and composer, Herbert Murrill, who was the BBC’s Head of Music until his death in 1952.
