A good piece of antique provincial silver in the shape of 6 bright cut Georgian Silver Teaspoons. Made by the partnership of two important Newcastle Silversmiths, John Langlands I & John Robertson I .Engraved to the fore with WSM  (see photos)  These measure 12.6cm (5 inches) long. The hallmarks consist of the Lion Passant mark, the Duty mark of King George III,and the makers mark 'I.L' over 'I.R' - John Langlands I & John Robertson I.No Town or date letters but this partnership was only active in Newcastle 1778 to 1795. According to their markings this mark was used 1784 to1790

The Box shown is not original and is for presentation purposes. Although I will despatch with the spoons. The spoons have a combined weight of 66g. these are in very good condition for their age. One spoon has a pin head sized dent in the bowl, and there are a few very fine surface scratches but there are no bends or breaks in the Silver.

The hallmarks are visible but rubbed.

Newcastle gold and silver production reached a peak in 1815 but declined from then onwards and in 1884, at a meeting of the Goldsmiths' Company, it was proposed that the assay office be wound up. The final dies were destroyed in June of that year.

Biography - John Langlands I and John Robertson I, Newcastle silversmiths. Partnership active 1778 – 1795. For more than half a century the Langlands family were the largest manufacturers of plate silver in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. On the death of Isaac Cookson in 1754, two of his former apprentices, John Langlands I and John Goodrick, took over his business. Goodrick died in 1757 and in 1778 John Langlands I took John Robertson I as partner, a well respected partnership which was dissolved in 1795 two years after Langlands’ death. Langlands’ son John II continued the business until his death in 1804 when his widow Dorothy took over until her retirement in 1814.
