Fritz White (1930-2010), a sculptor known for his profound connection to the American West and its indigenous cultures, was born in Milford, Ohio, near Cincinnati. Growing up along the Little Miami River, he was surrounded by the historical remnants of Native American tribes like the Shawnee, Miami, and Mingo. These artifacts and the rich mythology of the Native American people sparked his lifelong fascination with their culture. White's artistic journey began in the early 1960s when he sculpted his first piece in stone, marking the start of a remarkable career. A decade later, he gained recognition when he was elected to the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America. His artistic mission was to capture the spirit and resilience of the American people, particularly those who shaped the West. A notable achievement in his portfolio is the monumental sculpture "Out of the Mystic Past," which became the first outdoor installation at the Cowboy Artists of America Museum in Kerrville, Texas. White's path to becoming a professional artist was unconventional; before pursuing art full-time, he served in the Marines, played semi-pro football, and worked in insurance sales. It was a trip to Colorado in the late 1970s that deepened his love for sculpting in stone and led him to settle in Loveland, Colorado. Several of his sculptures, such as "Winning the Iron Shirt," can be found throughout Loveland, adorning the city with his artistic legacy. Fritz White was not only an artist but also a dedicated teacher who shared his knowledge through educational sessions for young artists and sculpture classes for the visually impaired. His commitment to preserving the heritage of the American West and Native American culture left an indelible mark on the art world. Fritz White passed away on April 10, 2010, in Loveland, Colorado, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire and educate.
