Ordnance Survey one inch map of Newcastle upon Tyne, Sheet 7. Third Large Sheet Series. Published in 1907. Revised in 1902-03. Minor Corrections and Railways Revised to January 1912

Paper map.

The River Tyne flows from the west at Corbridge to the east at Tynemouth and North Shields. Monkwearmouth appears in the south east corner while the coast  extends up to Blyth and the River Wansbeck. Ashington is notable by its absence as it was still a small pit village just off the map when it was produced.  Morpeth and Kirkwhelpington both make it onto the northern edge of the map.

It would appear to have been professionally folded at the time of printing and supplied without cloth backing or covers, quite possibly for military use.

Take a close look at it as not many paper maps of this age (112 years) survive in such good condition.  There are splits in the margins on some folds, which should ideally be halted with conservation tape applied to the rear, and the right hand edge of the map in the North Sea area and margin look tired and worn but the detail of the land area is as clear and bright as almost any map of this age.

This is one of the more scarce maps in the 3rd Edition Large Sheet Series so this is an opportunity to acquire a copy
