THE PAINTERS TIPS ON USING THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS:

BASECOAT PAINT – 2K CLEAR LACQUER & 2K PRIMER FILLER

(1)  Understanding basecoat paint. Basecoat paint dries matt or semi matt, and requires a top coat of clear gloss lacquer. Applying the lacquer separately gives that deep high gloss finish. Basecoat paint is a unique easy to apply material.  If you look at the paint, when dry, though a magnifying glass you will see very fine vertical particles similar to the hairs on the back of your hand it is designed that way so the top coat of clear lacquer will adhere, that is why it is important not to touch the basecoat once you are satisfied with the finish as this could flatten the vertical particles resulting in a shading effect once the top coat of clear lacquer has been applied.

(2) Carry out any repairs; make sure you do not overlap the body filler over the existing paintwork, treat any rust spots with Ferrozinc rust cure, spot primer any bare metal with Jawel self-etch primer. Mixing ratio: 1 part Etch Primer 1 part Etch Solution or for a small areas use the Pro-XL aerosol of etch primer.

(3) Preparation. Flat the car with a Grey Scotch Pad when you are applying the paint directly on to a pre painted surface. If you are priming the car first use a Red Scotch Pad. Alternatively, you can use 600 grit wet / dry paper or 400 grit DA Discs. Remove any dust with an air blow gun then use a tack cloth before you wipe with Jawel Panel wipe wax and grease remover.

(4) 2K Jawel Primer Filler. Mixing ratio:  4 parts primer 1 part 2k hardener then add 10% - 15% 2K Thinners to total volume mix, this can vary depending on spray gun set up.  (STIR WELL) only mix the amount of material you intend to use in one application. Apply a cover coat and leave for 10-15 minutes depending on weather conditions, then apply a second coat, you may need to apply a third coat depending  on your spray gun set up. When dry denib primer with a fine wet / dry paper 800 or 1000 grit, remove any dust then tack cloth the surface. Avoid leaving the primer overnight in a damp workshop if possible,   primers are porous so it could absorb moisture resulting in poor top coat adhesion.

(5) Prepare the workshop for spraying the basecoat & top coat, dampen floor and if possible earth the car. 2k clear coats build up static and will draw bits from your hair and clothes. I strongly recommend you wear painter’s hooded overalls. It is a must that you use the correct protection: Face mask, overalls and gloves and only use in a well ventilated workshop. (See manufacturer’s health and safety instructions on our web site)

(6) Basecoat Paint ApplicationSTIR PAINT WELL AND CHECK COLOUR. Most colour problems are caused because the paint has not been stirred thoroughly. Mix the paint: 1 part paint 1 part 2k / Basecoat Thinner this may vary depending on spray gun setup and air supply. Apply a cover coat of Basecoat Paint, leave for 10-15 minutes, depending on conditions. Once the paint has dried matt or semi matt it ready for the second coat, complete this process until you are satisfied with the coverage. If you get any bits or imperfections in the base paint, flat with a red scotch pad or 2000 grit wet / dry paper and repaint. When you are satisfied with the basecoat paint finish do not touch with your hands or anything else as this will bruise the paint and only show once the lacquer has been applied. It is now ready for the top coat of 2k acrylic clear lacquer. Please note, it is important to apply the top coat of clear lacquer as soon as possible, if the basecoat paint is left it could absorb moisture causing adhesion problems.

 (7) 2K Clear Lacquer. Application & Mixing Ratio: 2 parts clear lacquer 1 part 2k hardener and 10% 2k thinner to volume mixed material. Jawel 2K Clear coats are a direct high gloss material, when applied correctly.  Apply a cover coat of 2K Clear leave for 10-15 minutes, depending on conditions. I normally touch the masking tape and when the paint is like the back of a postage stamp, not sticky just a little tacky it is then ready for the next coat or coats. You should not have any need to cut and polish Jawel High gloss clear lacquer but if you do I would recommend you leave overnight and then use the new AG3 Advanced liquid compound. Runs in the lacquer. If you happen to get a run in the lacquer, this, in most cases can be flatted out, I have found the best way is if you use 1500 or 2000 grit wet / dry paper. Rub on a bar of soap and lightly flat the run. Do not try and flat out in one application lightly, flat then leave for a couple of hours or longer and do the same again taking it away in stages.   This is only my basic guide if you require more information please have a look on our web site  for the manufacturers Data sheets
