1898 Chicago Daily News Handbill USS MIANTONOMOH Photo

Handsome original antique advertisement for The Chicago Daily News, printed more than 113 years ago.

This sheet measures 11" x 15" and is printed on two sides. There is a photograph and descriptive text on the Miantonomoh, one of the last monitors constructed for the U.S. Navy. This iron-hulled warship saw brief service during the Spanish-American War, where she was part of the Cuban blockading squadron off Havana.

On the reverse side there is a subscription solicitation for The Chicago Daily News, "unexcelled for freshness, completeness and reliability." A weekly subscription to the paper was six cents. This ad is shown below; it is signed by Chicago Daily News subscription agent Joseph R. Harrison of Columbia City, Indiana.

Condition: There are two faint vertical creases, and there is some toning in the far outer edges at left and right. It is sound and intact, with no rips or tears.
