DESCRIPTION:

This has an  incredible, waxy-looking, star-shaped white bloom with bright red stripes that reminds us of fireworks and the Fourth of July, so that's what we named it.  It is fragrant and forms several offsets each year.  The foliage is upright, fountainesque, and about 20" high.  Our largest measured scape was 38" tall with 10 blossoms. The scapes are not very study but usually stay upright.   This variety is more tender and the foliage freezes back easily in the winter.

BACKGROUND:

Fourth of July is a X baconi type hybrid ( C. zeylanicum x C. americanum or C. erubescens).  The flower is an open star, very much like americanum, and it is tender like zeylanicum. Similar named clones are , Belle of Seville and Maurine Spinks (which we also grow).  Typical of zeylanicum hybrids the red stripe is darker towards the edge of the flower and fades as it gets near the center.

GROWING CONDITIONS:

This is a tender, but easy to grow bulb that should do well along the Gulf Coast.  It tolerates a wide range of soils but needs warmer temperatures (probably OK down into the high teens), at least to zone 8 (planted deeper and mulched).  Zone 9 or above should require no special care. Blooms come in mid-summer and continue, on and off, into the fall.  They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, and they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry.

DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID:

You are bidding on a JUMBO, blooming-size bulb at least 6 years old and about 3" in diameter which should bloom within 1 year.  Crinum do not like to be moved, so it can take a year just to "settle in."  Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November.  In the winter months the leaves may be absent.

WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.

Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old)

Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size)

Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old)

Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset)

Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated)
